Thursday 4/25 was a day full of new experiences with 2 facility tours for Animal Science. Our first stop was Borgic Farms west of Nokomis, top producing hog farm in the state of Illinois. They have 12,000 Sows total, 10,000 working (able to breed and have litters). They have roughly 1,400 piglets each day, and wean 100 sows everyday. Students got to tour the Farrowing barns, some even got the experience of sleeving a piglet - Blayne, Leeland and Isaiah received a little souvenir at the end for trying something new! Breeding barn, full AI with teasing boars on site, weaning barn where piglets will then get sorted and ready for a truck to haul to grower locations. They provide 450,000 market hogs for the market each year. Next we stopped at Baumans Dairy Farm, 7th generation family farm that has over 200 head of Dairy Cows. They are getting an average of 92-93 lbs of milk a day from one cow. Students got to experience the milking process in the parlor & bottle feed some bucket calves. Calves are weaned from their mothers after 12-24 hours as the cows will overproduce milk and it can make the calves sick from eating too much. We thank both sites for hosting us and allowing students new opportunities, as well as relate management and care practices learned in class to real life industry settings.

Our musical seniors will be performing in their last concert on May 1st at PHS. We will be honoring our seniors. Please come out and support these outstanding seniors.  The Pana High School Choir had a stellar year of music making!  They performed for the community at the Demonstration Concert, the Sounds of the Season Concert, Hickory Estates, PHS Basketball Games, the Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade, the Music in Our Schools Recital, and the Spring Honors Concert.  In the fall, we had seven students (Nicole Arkebauer, John Berns, Cayden Hankins, Gabriella Heinrich, Em Mendenhall, Emma Stephens, and Madison Wehrle) selected for the ILMEA District Concert and Jazz Choirs.  From that, two students were selected to attend ILMEA All-State in January:  Emma Stephens was in the Honors Choir, and John Berns was in the All State Vocal Jazz Choir.  John Berns was also chosen as a IHSA National Anthem Soloist and performed at the Boys' Basketball Championship in March.  Many of the students took part in the wildly successful Pana Panther Showcase.  The choir and soloists also performed at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest, where they earned 12 Superior ratings and 1 Excellent rating.  In April, the choir performed at the IHSA Organizational Contest where they earned 3 straight Division I (Superior) ratings.  Finally, the students very much enjoyed having Student Teacher Mrs. Roberts with them during the Spring Semester.  Mrs. Chase is very proud of their accomplishments!
